Mandate
Engramme is a self-run artists centre devoted to the promotion of original printmaking and has been for the past 35 years.
It continues to choose the renewal of this field as a privileged domain in visual arts creation. Engramme is particularly present in supporting the evolution of printmaking with its production and diffusion activities, which offer many opportunities to develop new expertise while constantly questioning the medium’s traditions. Its programming offers a privileged reflexion of the current trends taking place within the diversity of artistic research in printmaking.
History
In 1972, Marc Dugas, professor in the Faculty of Fine Arts at Université Laval, and a group of Quebec artists founded “L’Atelier de Réalisations Graphiques” by pooling their resources and equipment in order to create original fine art prints. In 1973, by providing space to show art works, Engramme became the first artists-run centre at Quebec to show contemporary art. When in 1978, ARG started inviting artists working outside of Quebec, Engramme became one of the important places for fine art printmaking exchanges in Canada. In 1995, the move to the Méduse cooperative, signalled a new direction for ARG which had changed its name to Engramme; the inter-relation with other artists centres in this unique cooperative structure revitalised the role that printmaking can play in the evolution of contemporary art. The past 7 years are marked by an improvement and a constant revitalization in our promotional tools, artistic direction, the implication of emerging artists, the quality of our activities and exchange developments with Canadian and international partners.
