Often referred to as China’s mother river, the Yangtze was Chun Hua Catherine Dong’s childhood river, and she grew up alongside it. Now at a distance from her homeland, the artist seeks to reconcile her memories and her visions of the future for these lands far from her, both in time and space. As she uses artificial intelligence to project images of her hometown’s future, the views she obtains are of waves breaking on its banks and buildings flooded. For centuries, the Yangtze River has been subject to annual flooding, which has proved devastating on many occasions and has become more pronounced in recent decades – real data on which these disturbing, technologically-generated visions are based.
