Bleu 59, Rouge 60 is a ciné-concert that delves into Quebec’s political and cinematic memory at a pivotal moment in its history. Set in the rural county of Lotbinière and beyond, around a 16mm film for the re-election of deputy Bernatchez and a host of small archives, a narrator-bonimenteur and a group of musician-performers rub shoulders with the images to bring them back into the world. Through the twists and turns of provincial roads, in the slippery confines of a kitchen chat with Haurice and Thérère, the performance activates archives, reassembles speeches and cultivates its garden. The soup simmers and the gin coos, the tongue fiddles and the lines rise, and the performers project themselves backwards and forwards: they’ll play music and talk free in the treasure trove of language.
