Mokuhanga, a traditional Japanese technique, is a form of woodcutting. It differs from Western engraving in that it mainly uses watercolors applied to the engraved blocks with a brush. In its traditional form, it requires no press, and prints are made by hand using a baren. Mokuhanga also uses different woods, tools and papers from those used in Western engraving, making it a technique in its own right. Its meditative aspect, low-tech process and use of entirely non-toxic materials make it an ideal choice for artists concerned about their health and the environmental impact of their practice.
